The Jane Doe Novel Experiment

Creating Two New Novels. Writing One Chapter Weekly. Podcasting As I Go. Welcome to The Experiment.

Is This the End?

I just “finished” Chapter 1 of Il Y A Pour Quatre.  (Minus re-reading, editing, re-writing, editing, re-reading, editing, letting it sit, re-reading, editing some more…)

I started with a few goals to accomplish:

  1. Introduce the main players, namely: Lily, Ava, Carson, Dominic, Sarah & Nathaniel.
  2. Let the story reveal what the story is about.
  3. Let the story reveal the relationship between the characters.

#2 and #3, went well. #1…well, Lily, Ava, and Carson made their debut. It looks like the others have to wait for Chapter 2. (Or 3) I think I’m okay with that. We’ll ask my editor-aka: best friend who is also a writer-what she thinks. In my opinion (for now), Chapter 1 ends organically and right where it should. To push it just to fulfill my starting goal may ruin it. So, we’ll see if she thinks this is the end.

I think you’re probably right. Haven’t read this obviously fabulous chapter yet … but sounds like you’re right. You don’t have to introduce everyone in the first chapter. As a reader, that’s a lot for me to think about. Your other two goals are more important! Can’t wait to read it!!!

Great advice, D. Bryant. I’ll not push too much too fast. I think the pace is just about right as is. ^.^
